The word DIET.....nobody likes that word! I try to utilize a variety of vocabulary words in place of DIET. We all want to be healthy, but it is hard to give up our favorite foods that aren't the best for us nutritionally. I always tell patients that they need to think of meal planning as their new lifestyle, a change that will take some time to occur but will remain with them a lifetime.
Lifestyle changes, meal planning, healthier choices, substitution, and food swapping........call it what you want, but sticking to it is difficult. Rome wasn't built in a day so changes need to occur over time to really stick. Don't pull a "cold Turkey" move......it never works. Start by taking away one food at a time that is less than healthy (fatty foods, fried foods, or snacks). Replace that one snack or food with something healthier. You may not like it at first, but over time your body will adjust and it will become the new snack.
Repeating this step until side dishes, meats, snacks, and drinks are healthier choices. This will make a great difference in your overall health, weight, and appearance. Add a little physical activity to your weekly routine and you are well on your way to a healthier lifestyle.
The main goal is health, not how we look.....ladies! So crash diets are never the way to go. First of all, they never work long-term and you risk complications from using diets like this. Everyone has tried one at some point in time......so admit it, did it work????? That's a big NO.
So, let's summarize what we know works........ Smaller portions, healthier choices, less fatty/fried/fast foods, lean meats, and activity. Changes made over time will be more likely to become routine and new healthy habits. Fad diets are a sure fire way to set yourself up for failure. Keeping a positive attitude and allowing some "special treats" 3-4 times a month is a good way to keep on the right path.
